Winter Break Update

My month off from school comes to a close tomorrow and I'm actually happy about that. I spent a week in Chicago with my best friend and then a week with a friend who flew out here to Minneapolis. Both weeks were great fun but I'm ready to spend and eat less.

Major news of the break is that I am the visual display intern at Anthropologie this summer! It's a great opportunity and a could become a dream job for me down the line.

I also designed the poster for the MFA exhibition, ACCUMULATION, which opens this friday.

I also quit my job at Starbucks and will be focusing on school and my job at the library. Having weekends off also gives me the opportunity to work on a community design project in Montevideo this semester.

So it should be an interesting, challenging, and fulfilling semester!

Now I'm off to design a Quinceañera invite.

I've had a group of women on my mind for a while now. All of these women, mostly artists and musicians, have died tragic deaths. There is something about that that I have never quite been able to get over. So I decided to make a series of 6 books that will serve as memorials for these women.

This is my first, for author & poet, Sylvia Plath. I've always seen her as mysterious so I let the ink act as a veil over her words.

So here is something i made after playing around in illustrator for a few days. It's a bit different for me which is kind of exciting!!

it's been quite a while since I've posted on here and it's mainly because my life has become SO boring! I work at Starbucks about 36 hours a week and sometimes I get home about 8 hours before I need to turn around and go back.

I have gone to a twins game, watched back to the future in the park and gone to a number of farmers markets. so don't get me wrong, I have been enjoying summer when I get the chance. I would like to visit on of the many lakes to really get the Minnesota summer experience.

working long hours unfortunately means artwork suffers. I have made much in te last few months but I did bind a book at the beginning of June to force myself to create "1 adays". basically I sketch something, doodle or write down a though or each day of the month of June. it's been interesting to see what u come up with when it doesnt have to be perfect. photos of that will come soon.

school is coming soon and I am super excited to begin and to cut down my hours at Starbucks. there really is something to be said for living like a college hobo, that's one thing about calarts I actually miss!

i explored washburn park near MCAD today. i've walked past it a few times but have never walked in it.

It's one of the few places that still has solid, white, untouched snow.

it's a fantastically warm 38 degrees today and i am NOT joking!! i've become acclimated to below 0 weather that this actually feels really good! i only have one jacket on...and its not zipped!!

i'm expecting to hear back from MCAD any day now so fingers crossed!!

when snow is really fluffy and floating through the air, its actually looks like drawings of snowflakes. they are so intricate and delicate that its amazing i could photograph any of them before they melted onto my coat!

My application to grad school has been submitted and now its time to wait. hmmmmm.....

anyways, heres a little postcard i made to beef up my portfolio and send out to my friends. registration on the one tiny flag was sort of irritating but i think it paid off!

SNOW! or as breaking news calls it "DECEMBER BLIZZARD!"

so it snowed 18 inches on saturday.
it snowed so much that starbucks closed as soon as i got to work and then had to walk home because the buses stopped running.
walking home in a blizzard is like trying to walk in sand while water is sprayed in your face.

EVERYTHING was closed for 2 days. buses weren't running, snow plows weren't out and even police weren't on the roads. there are solid walls of snow at cross streets where snow plows went one direction and not the other. its nuts!

luckily, i've had saturday, sunday & today off from work and don't go back until wednesday. so i've been able to hide out for a while.

considering how much everyone is freaking out, i've survived pretty well and had a little fun in the process!

it snowed 7 inches on Saturday! what?! they old me this sort of thing happened but I had no idea it actually would!! so I had to go get snow boots and a huge hat after work. now it's all plowed away and almost like it never happened. luckily I live in the city or else I'd still be trapped in snow and without power!

on a brighter note, isabelle will be here tomorrow!!! I've been finalizing all of the cleaning and decorating and laundry and I think I'm ready! we have a lot of fun things planned and I managed to get a lot of time off from work so we can watch Gilmore girls in out pjs. :) I'll have plenty of photos soon and I'm gonna have her help me film a walk through of my apartment so you guys can see it!!!

mother's always want to know if the leaves are changing. well i guess i can see why, they do look pretty amazing. although, they aren't this cool everywhere, maybe its because it isn't cold enough yet or maybe its because i live in downtown and not in some rural area.

anyways, It's been in the 50s here so it feels pretty great. although i don't understand how radiators work so it was REALLY hot in the apartment for the first night because i didnt know you could close them. i had been sleeping with the windows open because it was too hot to sleep! DUMB.

today, i had to downgrade from a coat to a sweater because it was a little warmer. unfortunately, its supposed to rain the rest of the week and that could be the beginning of snow. i just got a wool coat today that can fit a cardigan, sweater and coat under it, so hopefully ill be set for winter.

I'm sort of enjoying not have internet at home. for starters, i have read TWO books since i've moved here!!

while that may not be a big deal to some, it is to me! it helps that i dont have cable or internet to distract me. the other day, i read the ENTIRE new york times...in bed!!!

also, it's nice to make the internet some sort of an event. i have to get up and get ready to walk over to starbucks to use the internet. i drink coffee while i check my email and i find that i don't get caught up in link after link that leads me to some random website 3 hours later. not that i dont like doing that, but when im in a room full of strangers, my internet time is short and sweet.

so thats all for now, i was just thinking about how nice all of that was and how nice if feels to be able to walk to the corner coffee shop (even if it is the same corporation i work for). i'm off now to a rummage sale to buy an old (AMAZING) school chair for isabelle to sit on during our thanksgiving and to use for decoration the rest of the year.

then the sufjan stevens concert tomorrow night!!!

i like october. the leaves have already begun to change and are floating in the air. it feels good and smells good outside...that is, unless you're in LA right now. HAHAHAH! ok, anyways, I'm sitting in the starbucks down the street from my house, stealing some WIFI and chatting with Isa. We're planning what we're gonna do when she comes out!! exciting!

i'm gonna hang out at home after this and do some laundry and veg on my day off. then im gonna meet christopher for a gallery opening at his school.

I just finished my first week of work at the new starbucks. it went well except that this store is very by the book & very organized so I having to catch up a bit. its right across the street from Target Center and down the street from Target Field, so we get traffic from Twins & Vikings games. it can get a bit crazy but they mainly want bottled water and black coffee, which is SO different from my old frap-oo-sheeno store. i'm working 36 hours next week and that means i will (hopefully) make almost $100 in tips! that's INSANE!!! especially since the most i ever made was $20 a week at my old store.

tomorrow is supposed to be the first non-humid day, below 80 degrees since i've been here. so i'm planning some sort of outdoor venture, even if its just walking to the grocery store. at least i can be outside and NOT SWEAT!

some exciting things i've witnessed/experienced so far:

i did my laundry in the basement/dungeon and got creeped out.

i went to the library and i found a pair of pants on the floor by a toilet.

i followed directions to a post office...that didn't exist. and later found on google maps to be labelled as "Reported to not exist".

a baby threw a coffee mug in my water bucket as i was mopping at work...the mom didn't seem to mind.

scientology protesters dressed as peanuts characters and in V for Vendetta masks.

christopher told me he had a stare down with a squirrel holding a cookie.

i watched on the bus as an old lady made a 37-point turn on a hoverRound to get off at her stop.
all while the 8 year old girl next to me applied A LOT of deodorant & lotion.

well i think thats it for now. i'l bring my camera with me tomorrow so i can get caught up on my photo count.

we designed this so that we could screen print for our friends at a BBQ. We told everyone to bring shirts and tote bags to print on. The print can work either direction.

We were SO happy with how this came out! We finally figured out the YUDU!

Christopher and I got a Yudu printer so that we could screen print at home without waiting to expose in the sun and all that nonsense.

This is the digital & final versions of our first attempt. The colors changed & some lines blew out but overall, we were pretty happy with the outcome!

The BFA4s are always in charge of putting on a show for the rest of the program. Well its our turn and it has been a struggle.

Especially tonight, when the original poster designer/classmate flaked and hannah & i were asked to handle it. We were given a typeface and the imagery & thats it. We came up with this in less than two hours...just in time to hand it off to the printer.

This is my very first 4 color screenprint!!
We used clear base to make the inks transparent so that each color created a new one when overlaid.

I'm so proud of this because I pulled every single color on every single one of the 45 posters!!

i'm planning on moving to LA with my BFF, Isa, in about a month.

i'm applying to every job i can find. i have a job interview at disneyland next week. i'll pretty much take any job. although i cringed at the thought of applying to mcdonalds...im not THAT desperate yet.

i've been feeling hateful lately.
pretty much like i hate school and just want it to be over.

but then again thats exactly how i felt when i was a junior in high school.
premature senior-itis.

so i have a lot of iced coffee and st. johns wart.
and visit pasadena (christopher) & burbank (isabelle) as often as possible to make myself happier.

then today as i'm standing in the blow out room rinsing out my screen, it hits me.
that same excited, inspired feeling that i had before i got caught up in the calarts craziness.
i was standing there with ear plugs in my ears and a pressure washer in my hands realizing that i had coated & exposed my screen all by myself.
its the same way i felt the first time i finally got one good print in the photo lab at chaffey.

i thought i had lost the ability to feel those feelings.
so this screenprinting thing...maybe there's something there.

we went to an opening at fresh pressed on friday to see work by andy mueller (aka one of christopher's favorite artisits). christopher bought a "poster" which was just a piece of paper that he got to screenprint on himself. this alone made him excited then they said "hold on, we'll get the artist to help you"

so this is a picture of christopher screenprinting an andy mueller design with andy himself.

it was adorable! matching glasses and all!

sheli asked me if i wanted to work at studio number one's "simple pleasures" event. so christopher & i went and helped sell absent artist's work as well as our own. it was pretty cool & i got some cool stuff for myself!

i had my faculty review yesterday.

the calarts tshirt sale was last night.
by the time i got there they only had mens M & girls XL left of my design. sorry dad & christopher, no shirt for you.

i guess i should be excited that mine sold out.

so i didnt get the internship and i was a little disappointed at first.
but then i called the art director & asked what i could fix for next time.
he just said my portfolio wasnt well rounded enough because i hadnt been in school long enough.
but he said he liked me & my work & and try again next summer.

so i feel better.

then i decided that i still needed a summer job so i looked on craigslist.
i found a florist & invitation designer that own a shop called celebrate.

long story short:
after being in the shop for 10 minutes i had the job.
so i will be designing invitations & floral arrangements this summer.
im actually pretty excited about!
i had a lot of fun designing molly's wedding invite so i'd like to get some more experience.

the funniest part of the "interview" was when the florist introduced me to the owner...

florist: "you have to meet this girl!!! she is so cute & then you get to know her and she is amazing!!! and she's a graphic designer!!!! she can totally help us out!!!!!!"

owner: great! when can you start?! by the way...whats your name?"

so yeah, i went from feeling bad to pretty great in a short amount of time.

i had my interview today.
it went very well and i am very optimistic.
im not sure when ill hear back.

it was a strange/exciting feeling to ride
the train to the city and walk with my
fancy portfolio in hand. and get security
clearance to the 19th floor design studio.
